SUSTAINABILITY AT

THE BLAK SHAK

We strive to make the Blak Shak as sustainable and accessible as possible. From harnessing natural rainwater to embracing passive design principles, we invite you to discover how our retreat harmonises with nature and sets the stage for a greener, more sustainable stay.

Our toiletries and cleaning products are mindfully chosen to be user and environmentally friendly. We have carefully avoided synthetic fragrances and single-use items wherever possible. We ask guests to please be mindful of our dedication to reducing environmental impact while staying in the Blak Shak.

IMMERSE YOURSELF

IN THE PURITY OF

NATURAL RAIN WATER

The Blak Shak utilises a rainwater harvesting system that allows us to use rain water as our sole water source. Rain is captured and stored in a tank, before being carbon filtered. This not only improves taste and eliminates any odours, it also effectively removes contaminants. The rainwater is then UV treated, providing an additional layer of protection against harmful microorganisms and ensuring safe drinking water.

EMBRACE THE COMFORT OF NATURAL TEXTILES

We have carefully chosen natural textiles for our bedding and towels. Wrap yourself in our 100% organic cotton towels after a long soak in the bath. Sink into our soft bamboo/cotton sheets and linen duvet cover. Enjoy our beautiful, locally-made merino wool throw while cuddled up on the couch. We have sought out affordable, sustainable textiles wherever possible throughout the Blak Shak.

COMPOSTING AND ORGANIC WASTE MANAGEMENT

We aim to process as much organic waste onsite instead of ending up in landfills. Composting is a practical way to recycle organic waste and is part of our sustainable waste management here at the Blak Shak. We provide a compost bin for guests’ convenience and will happily empty, wash and return it to your cabin as often as needed. Sewage is also processed onsite through a septic waste treatment system.

PASSIVE HEATING AND COOLING

The Blak Shak was purposefully designed to not only provide privacy to guests, but also to harness the power of passive solar principles. Its north-facing orientation was designed to ensure optimal exposure to the sun’s rays throughout the day. Our large picture window welcomes natural light and in the cooler months, captures more of the sun’s warmth to naturally heat the space. By harnessing the sun’s energy, the Blak Shak can enjoy increased energy efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint.
